The Chihuahuas' Molera

80 to 90% of Chi's are born with a "soft spot" on top of their head and this is known as the Molera (or otherwise known as the 'fontanel'). The molera may vary in shape and size but it usually shrinks as the dog matures and becomes less noticable. It does not affect the chihuahua health in any way. However, in rare cases, the molera remains quite large and can be a sign of a serious problem called 'hydrocephalus'. Whilst Chis can in fact get 'hydrocephalus', the molera itself does not predispose the Chi to the condition.


Luxation of the Patella
(or better known as Dislocation of the Kneecap)

Luxation of the patella is a common chihuahua health problem. Very young chis may be able to compensate for this deformity, but the condition tends to worsen as the dog ages. It is also quite common for the symptoms not to become obvious until the Chi is in its prime or latter years. The dislocation can cause the kneecap to "Pop" in and out of place very easily. Studies have shown that prompt treatment will prevent the dog from becoming 'crippled.'


Hypoglycemia

If you are buying your pup from a registered dog breeder (that is, a breeder who has an official certificate that is registered with your Kennel Club Society), then you can expect to pay a top premium. This is particularly important if you wish to enter your chi into shows, competitions and exhibitions, or if you wish to use your chi for breeding purposes. Potty Training A Chihuahua

There are many constructive ways to potty training a chihuahua. If you follow some basic strategies then housebreaking a chihuahua should go a lot smoother for you. You will find some of these strategies below. The key thing to remember is that patience is required and as much supervision as possible – if you want maximum results.

Obviously, if you are working during the day, it can be a bit tricky to house train your chi pup, but there are some pertinent methods that will establish the desired result, although it may take a little longer.

The thing to understand about Chi pups, like all infant creatures, is that they need to develop bladder and bowel control. Additionally, because Chi’s are so tiny as pups, they need frequent supplies of food and drink – all of which adds up to frequent needs to do potty.

One of the crucial factors in establishing potty training is association, that is, certain commands and procedures that your puppy will quickly associate with an action. So, for instance, once the pup has had a meal or drink, you would wait around 20 - 30 minutes and then take the pup out to one designated area outside. This will become the pup's associated area to ‘do potty’. You would then place the pup down in this designated area and command "do potty", or whatever wording is associated with the pup relieving itself (provided that you keep using that one phrase so the pup learns to associate it with the action). It is also important to make a big fuss over the pup once he has relieved itself for positive reinforcement.

Chihuahuas generally make a good companion dog, make wonderful family pets and are also very loyal to their owners. They are highly intelligent and generally learn quickly. For example, they can be energetic or placid; sweet natured or slightly temperamental; serious or fun-loving. And like humans, they can be ‘introverted’ or ‘extraverted’.

There are however, certain attributes of Chihuahuas that are pertinent in establishing suitability.

First, lets’ look at some positive attributes of the Chihuahua characteristic and temperament:

they are the smallest dog breed and therefore the easiest to carry around

they are so small that they do not need much exercise

they are lively, comical and ‘entertaining’

they make excellent watchdogs

they are extremely loyal and very loving little creatures

they make wonderful companion dogs

they are highly intelligent and generally easy to train

they have various sizes and colours and are all undeniably very cute

and they live a long time (well into teen years)

Chihuahuas and Cold Weather

Chihuahuas are most definately prone to the cold, but lots of people who live in cold regions around the world are still chihuahua owners!! Furthermore, there are lots of ways of keeping your chihuahua warm.

Both short-haired and long-haired chis are vulnerable to the cold. They are tiny creatures and have a small body mass and so their body temperatures can drop very quickly in cold weather.

Chihuahua Diet

Chihuahuas are such small creatures, and so it is better to incorporate several small meals each day, rather than one large meal. If you are working during the day, it may be convenient if you just leave one large bowl of food, and your chi will snack on this throughout the day. And of course, always ensure your chi has access to plenty of fresh water.


Be wary of introducing processed tinned food into the chihuahua diet. Their digestive system does not handle it very well and it can cause them to have diarrohea. Rather, it is best to give them dry dog kibble that is designed for small dogs.

I recommend that you mix the kibble in with a small amount of cooked rice along with a small amount of chopped cooked chicken. A few cooked vegetable scraps is fine as well, mixed into the mixture, but make sure it is well chopped up. If you must introduce tinned dog food into the chihuahua diet, please use it sparingly and make sure you mix it in with the dry kibble.
